Current rate

1 USD = 48.5 EGP as of 2026-05-17. Egypt is the world's 5th largest remittance recipient (~$22 billion/year), primarily from Egyptian workers in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and the US. EGP has lost ~67% of its value against USD over 5 years due to multiple devaluations (2022, 2023, March 2024) tied to IMF program requirements. The March 2024 free float (after years of de facto pegs) was followed by IMF's $8B extended program and CBE rate hikes to 27%.

❓ FAQ

USD to EGP FAQ.

Sending USD to EGP from Saudi Arabia or UAE — best channel?
For amounts under $3,000: Western Union, Al Ansari Exchange, BFC Group, and Lulu Money dominate the GCC-Egypt corridor. Most deliver to Banque Misr, National Bank of Egypt (NBE), or CIB Egypt accounts within hours. For larger amounts: NBE Saudi branch (NBE has direct branch presence in Saudi Arabia and UAE) offers preferential remittance rates for established customers. App-based remittance has not yet penetrated the Egypt corridor as deeply as the India corridor.
Why has EGP weakened so much against USD?
Egypt ran a soft USD peg around 15.7 from 2020-2021, then was forced into multiple devaluations starting March 2022 (to 18.5), October 2022 (24.0), January 2023 (32.5), and March 2024 (50+) under IMF program conditionalities. The March 2024 float officially ended the multi-rate system and stabilized the rate around 47-50. CBE rate hikes to 27% have anchored the new equilibrium but reserves remain thin and the rate is sensitive to Suez/tourism/remittance flow shocks.
Egypt domiciliary USD account — am I eligible?
Yes — Egyptian banks (NBE, Banque Misr, CIB, QNB Al Ahli) offer USD savings accounts to Egyptian residents and non-residents with appropriate KYC. Useful for diaspora workers parking USD-denominated savings without conversion until needed. CBE generally permits free repatriation but with KYC documentation. Domestic transactions still require EGP. Most diaspora Egyptians maintain both USD and EGP accounts at the same bank.
