Current rate

1 USD = 15.8 GHS as of 2026-05-18. USD-GHS reflects Ghana's tumultuous five-year journey through sovereign debt default, IMF program, and partial recovery. The cedi collapsed from ~5.7/USD in 2021 to a peak of ~16/USD in late 2022 as Ghana defaulted on its external debt in December 2022 and entered an IMF Extended Credit Facility ($3B) in May 2023 alongside G20 Common Framework debt restructuring with bilateral creditors. Since the IMF program began, the cedi has actually been one of Africa's better-performing currencies in 2024-25 — debt restructuring concluded with bilateral creditors in mid-2024 and with private bondholders in late 2024.

❓ FAQ

USD to GHS FAQ.

Why did Ghana default on its sovereign debt in December 2022?
Compound crisis. Pre-COVID, Ghana had accumulated rapid Eurobond debt during the 2017-2021 commodity boom — debt-to-GDP rose from 50% to 85%+. COVID stimulus, energy subsidy costs, and rising US interest rates (which hiked dollar debt service) all hit simultaneously through 2022. Inflation spiked to 54%, the cedi lost 60% of value, and reserves fell below 1 month of imports. Default became the only option, and Ghana entered the G20 Common Framework restructuring alongside the IMF ECF in May 2023.
Has the Ghanaian cedi actually recovered in 2024-25?
Yes, more than headline rate suggests. While USD-GHS is at 15.8 vs the 2022 peak of ~16, real-effective-exchange-rate measures show genuine cedi recovery as Ghana's inflation has fallen back to ~8-10% from 54% peak. The cedi was Africa's best-performing currency in 2024 (appreciating against most regional peers), supported by gold/cocoa export surges, IMF program disbursements, and successful debt restructuring conclusion. Markets see continued gradual cedi appreciation through 2026-27 if IMF program execution stays on track.
Best way to send USD to Ghana for remittance or business?
For diaspora remittance to family: Sendwave, WorldRemit, and Remitly all support GHS with competitive rates post-stabilization (~1.5% all-in cost). MoMo (MTN Mobile Money) integration with these services means recipients can receive funds directly to mobile wallet rather than bank account. For business and import financing: Ecobank, Standard Chartered Ghana, and GCB offer USD-GHS treasury rates on amounts above $25K. The parallel-market premium that existed in 2022-23 has largely disappeared since IMF program disbursements stabilized FX availability.
