Driven by ~17M Nigerian diaspora globally (UK, US, Canada, South Africa primary). ❓ FAQ

USD to NGN FAQ.

Best way to send USD to NGN for Nigerian diaspora remittance?
For amounts under $3,000: Sendwave, Wise, and Remitly offer competitive NGN rates with delivery to GTBank, Zenith, UBA, or First Bank in minutes via NIP (Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System). For larger amounts: direct bank wire to a Nigerian domiciliary account (USD-denominated) then converted locally — often the best rate due to CBN's tiered FX windows. Avoid Western Union for large amounts; spreads are wider than digital alternatives.
Why did NGN crash from 380 to 1580 per USD?
Pre-2023, Nigeria operated a multiple-exchange-rate system with the official rate at ~₦450/$ and the parallel ("black") market rate at ₦700-1100/$. In June 2023, the new Tinubu administration unified the rates and let the official rate float, immediately crashing to ~₦750/$. By 2024, CBN ran down its forward book and the rate slid to ₦1,500-1,600/$ as accumulated FX backlogs cleared. The market is now effectively single-rate but volatile due to thin FX reserves (~$32B).
Nigeria CBN exchange rate windows — do I get the official rate?
Post-2023 unification, there is effectively one rate: the NAFEX (Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange) rate at which licensed I&E (Investors & Exporters) Window trades occur. This is the rate most retail remittances now use. Some I&E participants offer marginally better rates for institutional flows. For diaspora remittances, what you see on Remitly/Wise is close to NAFEX with a small markup.
