Current rate

1 USD = 3.64 QAR as of 2026-05-18. The Qatari riyal has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.64 since July 2001 — replacing an earlier informal peg — and Qatar Central Bank defends it with $80B+ in reserves plus the Qatar Investment Authority's $500B+ in dollar-heavy assets. The peg survived its biggest test during the 2017-2021 GCC blockade, when QAR briefly traded as low as 3.83 in offshore markets while the onshore rate held at 3.64 — a clear demonstration of QCB's capacity and political will. US-Qatar trade is dominated by LNG (Qatar is the world's second-largest LNG exporter and a strategic US energy supplier post-Ukraine), defense procurement (Al Udeid Air Base hosts CENTCOM forward HQ), and Qatar Airways aviation spend on Boeing aircraft.

❓ FAQ

USD to QAR FAQ.

Did the 2017-21 blockade actually threaten the QAR peg?
It tested it but never broke it. Offshore non-deliverable forwards traded at meaningful discounts during the blockade peak, but the onshore rate held at 3.64 throughout. Qatar deployed roughly $40B of reserves and QIA liquidity in the first few months to defend the peg and signal commitment. The blockade ended in January 2021 with the Al-Ula declaration, and offshore-onshore basis fully normalized within months.
How does Qatar LNG affect USD-QAR specifically?
LNG contracts are mostly USD-invoiced, so when Qatar exports gas to Europe, Asia, or Latin America, the receipts arrive as dollars and need conversion to QAR for domestic spending — that creates structural USD selling pressure that supports the peg. North Field East and South expansions will roughly double LNG capacity by 2027, mechanically increasing this dollar inflow.
Best way to send USD to Qatar for business or expat salary?
For amounts under $10K: Wise and Revolut both support QAR with ~0.5% markup. For corporate flows: QNB, Commercial Bank of Qatar, and Doha Bank offer treasury rates on wires above $25K. For Indian, Filipino, and Nepali expats remitting home from Qatar, Al Dar Exchange and Al Fardan have the best multi-currency coverage.
